Common roofing terms and definitions to help you understand your project.
- Flashing
- Metal or other material used to seal joints and prevent water intrusion around roof penetrations.
- Shingle
- A single overlapping element of a roof covering, typically asphalt, wood, or slate.
- Underlayment
- A layer of material between the roof deck and the visible roofing material for added protection.
- Deck
- The structural surface, usually plywood or OSB, that supports the roofing materials.
- Ventilation
- System that allows air flow in the attic to reduce moisture and heat buildup.
